What is laser tattoo removal?
Tattoo removal has been performed with various tools since the start of tattooing. While tattoos were once considered permanent, it is now possible to remove them with treatments, fully or partially. The “standard modality for tattoo removal” is the non-invasive removal of tattoo pigments using lasers. Different types of lasers are used to target different colors of tattoo ink depending on the specific light absorption spectra of the tattoo pigments. Typically, black and other darker-colored inks can be removed completely using lasers while lighter colors such as yellows and greens are still very difficult to remove. Success can depend on a wide variety of factors including skin color, ink color, and the depth at which the ink was applied.

What is PiQo4?
The Lumenis PiQo4 laser is our tattoo removal laser using Nano and Picosecond laser pulses.  The Nanosecond pulses are used to deliver short bursts of energy that break down the larger and deeper pigment or ink particles.  The Picosecond pulses dismantle the smaller and shallower particles. The high energy levels of PiQo4 allow tattoo removal with fewer treatments compared with other competing laser systems.  PiQo4 offers up to 15 spot sizes, ranging from 2mm to 15mm, the largest uniform spot size in today’s industry and almost four times larger than that of the closest competitor. PiQo4’s larger spot sizes allow deeper maintenance of penetration into the dermis and better dispersal of the pigment or embedded ink particles. Studies have demonstrated that treatment with a large spot size at low fluences significantly decreases any occurrence of blistering, discoloration or scarring* on the skin’s surface, since the energy is being spread over a wider area. Since each pigment color absorbs a specific wavelength, PiQo4 offers 4 wavelengths in order to treat the broadest range of pigment/tattoo colors, on the widest range of skin types. Its four wavelengths – 1064nm, 532nm, 650nm and 585nm – target 9 of the most frequently used tattoo colors ranging from light orange to dark black. With PiQo4 you can erase the rainbow!

Why PiQo4?
PiQo4 laser technology effectively removes all common color tattoos, either amateur or professional.  This new technology targets both large and small tattoo particles simultaneously, breaking them into tiny particles that are naturally removed by your body.  The laser only targets the ink and will not harm the surrounding skin. Tattoo ink particles vary in size. Previous technologies would break down either small particles or large particles, but not the two together.  The versatility of the PiQo4 allows for precise treatment of varying particle size and tattoo colors.

What should I expect?

When will I see results?
The number of treatments needed depend on the tattoo itself, the area of the body, skin color and overall health of the individual (age, metabolism, autoimmune, lifestyle).

Location matters:  The closer the tattoo is to the heart the better circulation, therefore better results.  More colorful tattoos and greater surface area usually require more treatments. Amateur tattoos are typically not as deep as professional ones and are easier to remove.  A treatment series can range from 3 sessions up to 1015 sessions and are conducted 6-8 weeks apart. In the case of a coverup, we work with your tattoo artist to achieve a suitable canvas in as few treatments as possible. A consult with one of our laser technicians will provide you with a more accurate estimate of sessions needed.

What can I expect after treatment?
Immediately after treatment you will see a whitish “frosting” over the tattoo.  This skin will often swollen the area of the tattoo, accompanied by mild redness.  The frosting, swelling and redness with resolve in a matter of hours. The tattoo my crust of blister as the body repairs itself.  The will resolve naturally. The tattoo with fade gradually in the following weeks as your body clears the ink.

What is the treatment like?
Your laser technician with provide guidelines for before and aftercare, as well as the approximate time of the laser removal session.  During your session you will hear the laser fire as loud, audible popping sounds, then feel heat over the general area of the skin. The treated area with feel as if it were sunburned.

Is is right for me?
PiQo4 laser tattoo removal treatments are not suitable for everyone and carry some risks.  Persons known to form keloids may be more prone to scarring after any skin trauma including laser administration to the skin.  Persons with dark skin may be at increased risk of hypo pigmentation. Hypo and hyper pigmentation are common risks of treatment.
